May the Fourth Be With You, Always
Last week, geeks all across the galaxy convened to pay tribute to one of the most beloved franchises of all time…okay, maybe not the galaxy, but for sure around the world. Geeks Who Drink has been in full Star Wars mode as we celebrate and challenge our community to a trivia Duel of the Fates—and 2024 quizzers did not disappoint!
May has always been a big month for Star Wars fans. You’ve got May the Fourth, Revenge of the Fifth, release anniversaries for more than half the films, plus director George Lucas’s very own birthday.
So it’s no surprise that May is a big month for Geeks Who Drink too; Star Wars is and always has been our top-selling theme quiz. (Though we’re keeping an eye on you, Miss Swift.) This year, we produced a fourth edition of the quiz so we could continue to grow alongside the Star Wars universe, including the latest shows, seasons, and intergalactic news.
And, year after year, all versions of the quiz stay in high demand. We saw a nearly 20% growth in the number of GWD Star Wars quizzes nationwide compared to May the Fourth 2023! The competition was fierce, with some of the toughest questions in the audio rounds. We all know the most iconic quotes, but less than 5% of players could fill in the three-word blanks of the below line of dialogue.
“Take evasive action! Green Group, stick close to holding sector MV-7.”
Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi
“Admiral, we have enemy ships in sector 47.”
“It’s a trap!”
“Fighters coming in!”
But with all of those tough questions, what team came out on top? Well, here are our top three scores.
- 95 Points – “Don’t Get Cocky Kid” – Border City Ale House in El Paso, TX
- 91 Points – “The Cami-know-ans” – Border City Ale House in El Paso, TX
- 91 Points – “Stay on Target” – Glass Half Full by Alamo Drafthouse in El Paso, TX
- 89 Points – “Sand” – Smokin’ Oak Wood-Fired Pizza & Taproom in Fayetteville, AR
But brains aren’t everything! We have a few honorable mentions to give out for some of our favorite team names.
- “Come AT-AT Me Bro” – Martial Pint in San Angelo, TX
- “R2DTF2” – City Orchard in Houston, TX
- “Boba Fettucines” – Triple Rock Brewing in Berkeley, CA
- “OBGYN Kenobi” – Max Taps Co. in Centennial, CO
- “Looking for love in Alderaan places” – Galveston Bay Brewing in Clear Lake Shores, TX
Overall, big shout out to the entire state of Texas for being such hardcore Star Wars fans! As for the rest of the country, you’ve got 359 days left to study up for next year.
