A Season of Success for Quiz for a Cause

Published October 4, 2024

At Geeks Who Drink, we love sharing our love of knowledge, our love of fandom, and our love of community. One of our favorite ways to do that is through our Quiz for a Cause program, which uses our regular pub quizzes to support local causes and nonprofits across the country. So far this year, we’ve hosted more than seventy special events in partnership with organizations both big and small.

We couldn’t be more thankful for our amazing hosts and quizzers for their impact. Here are just a few of the success stories you have made possible over the last few weeks!

AUSTIN, TX – The Arc of the Capital Area

The Arc of the Capital Area’s mission is an organization devoted to empowering and inspiring Central Texans with intellectual and developmental disabilities, as well as their families. They have a long roster of supportive programs, from pet therapy to arts and education. During their QFAC event at Patrizi’s West, they featured and even sold some original art created by their members!

From the moment I pushed submit on the very easy to fill out online form, I was gathered into the bosom of the Geeks Who Drink model. The space was beautiful and the host location staff friendly, helpful, knowledgeable, and truly went above and beyond. Our Quiz Master (Anna) brought joy, humor, and heart-warming moments to our cause throughout the night. She was so incredibly graceful and kind.

As far as goals, ACHIEVED! We raised over $300, we reached 100+ people with our mission, we sold some original art (which means the adult with disability who painted it got a commission and their Art & Education program got supported). We signed up a quiz participant as a volunteer, and our staff, board and volunteers had a fun night out!

Would we do it again? A resounding, “heck yeah!”

Thank you, 1,000 times, for this model, it SERVES the community, and we had fun doing it!Annie Wells, Chief Development Officer

If you’re in the Austin area, The Arc of the Capital Area will be showcasing even more art next month at their Art on the Rocks event.

DENVER, CO – SafeHouse Denver

SafeHouse Denver provides vital resources and information to those affected by domestic abuse in the larger Denver area. Their programs range from emergency sheltering to counseling programs, all of which help survivors of all ages to cope, move forward, and find community.

With such important work, we were thrilled to hear that their latest QFAC at Spangalang Brewery was one of their most successful yet!

On behalf of the survivors we serve, I want to thank the Quiz for a Cause Team, Stefani, Spangalang Brewery, and especially Dave, our Quiz Master.

I believe this is the third Quiz we’ve done, and the kindness, enthusiasm, support, and energy went above what we’ve experienced before. The room was filled with passionate and curious people who wanted to learn and connect more. As a nonprofit organization, you cannot ask for more. This was our highest fundraising night from this event, providing six nights of emergency shelter and a group session for a survivor. That is all possible because of you.

Thank you all so much for being a light in our community. We’re proud to have you a part of the SafeHouse Denver family.

TRI-CITY AREA, WASHINGTON – Erin Steinert Scholarship

Last month, the Geeks Who Drink community pulled together after the devastating loss of our friend and quizmistress, Erin Steinert. An amazing host with her own dedicated community, her quizzers and friends gathered to honor her and raise funds for a STEM scholarship in her name, benefiting an underprivileged student in the Tri-City Area.

We were overwhelmed by the love and support that came pouring in both digitally and in-person at the two QFAC events, hosted at Moonshot Brewing in Kennewick and The Emerald of Siam Thai Restaurant and Lounge in Richland.

The event [at Moonshot Brewing] was fantastic, pretty packed crowd, we had a silent auction with 9 vendors that brought in $450+ alone. In total, we raised $2,321 for the scholarship.

I’ll say that the host was amazing (of course I’ll say that), Moonshot provided basically unlimited support in helping make this successful, and everyone had a blast. I know that this is the most money I have ever raised at a QFAC and it speaks to the influence and importance of our fallen friend. Thank you for providing me the support that I needed to make this a true success! – BJ, Quizmaster

Together, the Quiz for a Cause events raised over $4K in Erin’s name. Words can not express how grateful we are to the community for making that possible—but since this is a blog article, words are all we’ve got. So, THANK YOU!

We’ve done a lot of good work this year, but there’s always more to be done. If you’re interested in organizing a Quiz for a Cause event for your cause, you can learn more here and contact our team at qfac@geekswhodrink.com.
