"D'Nouncer" Duane Cunningham is a roller derby announcer turned quizmaster who was raised by wolves.  He also like to draw silly cartoons.  By day, he draws parrots, hula girls and palm trees and what not for a company that makes Hawaiian shirts.  It's a tough life, but he recognizes that someone has to do it.

Here’s how it went at The Drop last night.  First of all, we had a cool new team called Tom Jones Reunion.  They did really well, and I get the feeling that it’s not unusual.  Heh.

But a lot of other things about last night were.  For one thing, we had a tiebreaker in the end.  For another, Tom was back behind the bar for the first time in weeks.  But the most notable thing about the festivities was this: toward the end of the first round, the sound board abruptly coughed up a loud death rattle and then was no more.

So, I did something that could only happen at The Drop:  I YELLED THE REST OF THE QUIZ ALL NIGHT.  And it worked, because you guys are wonderful people.  In fact, it was kind of cool!   Cool enough to deliberately not use a powered sound system again?  Hell no.  But for one magical night, it was like we were all gathered around a campfire together.

A campfire fueled by knowledge of such things as:

- Manly Men Anagrams like we heard in round 1.  And yes, you’re right; Sean Connery isn’t the only famous Scotsman ever.  But who else do you really need?

-Round 2’s Songs-You-Almost-Convinced-Me-To-Sing-Since-The-Sound-System-Was-Broken.  Ah, looking back, I probably should’ve.

-The Sooner or Later round full of foreign words: Oddly enough, we usually have most teams turn in their answer early on S&L rounds, and usually only a couple hold out.  Last night was the opposite.

-The visual round was harder than usual for most teams.  I guess all the political scandals over the last few years kind of run together.

-And, of course, our fond farewell to Roger Ebert.

Everybody did pretty well.  Strong showing by Robots on Parole and the bar team, this week called Jambone Belisco.  Thanks to It’s My Birthday for spending the evening with us while… well… celebrating a birthday.  Thanks also to Where Are We for playing a few rounds, (although their name could have also applied to Breakfast Fight Club who were uncharacteristically absent).

But in the end, it came down to Herman’s Hermits and newcomers Tom Jones Reuinion, and while knocking off the winningest team of late on their rookie night would’ve been an impressive debut for TJR, HH fought them off in sudden death.  Way to go, both of you!

Seriously, though, thanks for being the best venue a QM could ask for.  It’s nice to know that you care about our silly but fun game not only enough to play every week (over a year now, for some of you), but there’s not a lot of places where I could have pulled off just shouting out the quiz sans mic and have you guys not only play along, but actually probably have an even better night because of it.  Thanks, you magnificent bastards.

Ahem.  But enough sappiness, I have a very important note, for real:

NEXT WEEK (4-17), THERE WILL BE NO PUB QUIZ.  The Drop has reserved the night for a big private event.  The venue will be closed to the public altogether, in fact, right after happy hour.  So… I’ll see you in two weeks!  (And I’ll remind y’all on FB next week, too).

We’ll be back on the 24th!  See you then.

I love the Drop.  We have such a good time every week.

Take last night for example. We had a lovely quiz.  We listened to early demos of famous songs, did reviews of novels in the form of Haikus (which everyone did surprising well on), and we had an automotive round.  The latter seemed like it should be custom made for The K’s, a group of three young ladies with an automotive background, but alas, it didn’t go so hot.

Things did go well for The Bigger Lebowskis, which was the evening’s bar team who for the second straight week was sans Tom, this time replaced by newcomer Zach, who did a pretty awesome job in Tom’s absence.   Herman’s Hermits came in 3rd, which is good for most teams, but actually represents them coming off a hot streak.  They reacted by violently pulling a picture off the wall and throwing it around like a discuss, knock people down and sending bottles and furniture flying everywhere!

Oh, Round 7 was glorious.  Saturday morning cartoon themes done in chiptunes.

Anyway, The Lebowskis won, Breakfast Fight Club were the runners up.  Newcomers Jesuits and Wino Anonymous were both delightful and will hopefully come back.

See you next week, Droppies!

We hadn't seen FFFFF in a while, but evidently they still have it.  They wound up beating Breakfast Fight Club in sudden death.  We also saw the return of Hot Tamales, Nitro and the Space Cadets (whose swollen numbers resulted in a split squad), and Beef Cakes for Hire, often known as Robots on Parole.  The bar team called themselves It Hurts Wehn I Pee 2, and were without Tom, replaced this week by Drop proprietor, Liz.

And it was a typical damned fun time.  We heard some metal covers of otherwise famous songs, most of which we kind of wanted to hear in their entirity. We talked baseball in anticipation of Monday's opening day.  We drank a lot of beer.  What can I say?  It was the usual awesome Wednesday night at the Drop.  Don't miss it next week!
